Position Rationale:

Working on the Anthony Henday ring road reporting to a Foreman based in Sherwood Park, a Laborer is responsible for providing support for all aspects of highway maintenance. A Laborer provides a broad range of support in areas, such as removing materials and debris, site preparation, washing bridges and appurtenances, trimming using hand held tools and basic equipment operation.

General Responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a highway maintenance crew.
  • Garbage and debris removal from the road right of way.
  • Washing of bridge decks and appurtenances.
  • Trimming grass using a hand-held trimmer.
  • Site preparation for Tractor and Spider mowing.
  • Execute temporary traffic control plans as part of a HM crew by placing, removing, covering and uncovering traffic control signs, cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
  • Other general labor and highway maintenance related duties as required.

Working Environment/Conditions:

  • Night time working may be required for some duties.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to high speed / high volume traffic.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Use of sunscreen, long sleeves and appropriate headgear is recommended.
  • Must comply with the company’s substance testing requirements.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 40 on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform heavy strenuous and repetitive work in an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to act in a courteous manner in order to project a positive company image.
  • Awareness of one’s own condition and relative fitness to ensure total readiness for work.

Our story begins in 1996 with the privatization of Highway Maintenance in the Province of Alberta. We started our operations in Southern Alberta, and have maintained the roads, and bridges in the Lethbridge Contract Maintenance Areas ever since. In 2001, we assumed responsibility for the Calgary area, and further expanded our operations in 2016 with the 30-year maintenance contract of the North East section of the Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton. In August 2019 we added all of Mountain View County and Clearwater County to our areas and currently maintain approximately 30% of the provincial road network (~ 18,500 lane km’s). Over 200 plow trucks, and more than 350 people, work all year round to provide safe roads and bridges to the travelling public in Alberta.
