Position Rationale:

As part of a company training initiative and under the guidance of Volker’s Fleet Services Coordinator, this position is responsible for classroom and hands on field training in the delivery of an Equipment Maintenance and Compliance (EMC) program. This training position holds the responsibility of assisting in the achievement of a Strategic Priority focused on the lifecycle optimization of Highway Maintenance Equipment to help in the reduction and severity of equipment repairs and incidents. The ECM training program focuses on “National Safety Code for Motor Carriers” (NSC), other applicable legislation(s), manufacture and Volker operational processes and procedures.

Position Accountabilities:

  • Assist in the development of EMC training materials.
  • Participate in regular Learning and Development team meetings and assist in development of an annual Operational training program and field training schedules.
  • Oversight of the EMC theory-based classroom training through on-line Saba TalentSpace.

Training Delivery:

  • Responsible for the EMC in-field classroom and hands-on training at Highway Maintenance Yards including greasing, maintenance of all Fleet Services equipment, load securement, pre-post trip inspections, heavy truck & trailer brake adjustments, wheel torques, operations and calibration of sanding systems and manufacturer operational procedures of equipment.

Training Trends & Continual Improvement:

  • Track and report to Learning and Development team trends being realized during training sessions and make recommendations for improvements to training materials and or training processes.
  • As a Certified ISO 9001 Quality Management company this position will work closely with all internal partners in development of continual improvement through ISO Quality Management Principles.

Working Environment/Conditions:

  • Will supply training support to various Highway locations; may require up to 60% travel.
  • Office & Field work location primarily within Alberta.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:

Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong mechanical background and or a Journeyman mechanic with minimum 10 years related experience.
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license with air endorsement at a minimum, Class 1 would be preferred.
  • Certifications: Any certifications specific to equipment compliance, maintenance, or training methodologies can be advantageous.
  • Expertise in Equipment: In-depth knowledge of the specific equipment, machinery, or systems relevant to the industry.
  • Compliance Standards: Understanding of industry regulations, safety protocols, and compliance standards related to equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Training Experience: Previous experience in designing, developing, and conducting training programs, preferably related to equipment compliance and maintenance.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Instructional Design: Ability to create engaging training materials, presentations, and manuals using various instructional design methodologies.
  • Facilitation Skills: Capability to conduct interactive and engaging training sessions, utilizing different teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles.

Our story begins in 1996 with the privatization of Highway Maintenance in the Province of Alberta. We started our operations in Southern Alberta, and have maintained the roads, and bridges in the Lethbridge Contract Maintenance Areas ever since. In 2001, we assumed responsibility for the Calgary area, and further expanded our operations in 2016 with the 30-year maintenance contract of the North East section of the Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton. In August 2019 we added all of Mountain View County and Clearwater County to our areas and currently maintain approximately 30% of the provincial road network (~ 18,500 lane km’s). Over 200 plow trucks, and more than 350 people, work all year round to provide safe roads and bridges to the travelling public in Alberta.
