Mainline Construction Contributes to Grande Prairie’s Firebreaks

In May 2023, northern Alberta experienced an unprecedented start to the wildfire season; nearly 100 fires were burning at the season’s peak, leading thousands of Albertans to evacuate. In response to the fires, the Government of Alberta worked with the County and City of Grande Prairie to build a firebreak around the city to minimize the impact and potential devastation of a fire.

Firebreaks slow the spread of wildfires by removing vegetation, including deadwood and undergrowth, down to the bare ground or mineral soil. Since mid-May, Mainline Construction and other local construction companies have cleared trees that could accelerate a fire to create the firebreak.

“When we were approached to work on the firebreak, there was no question that we would help out,” said Brad Ogston, General Manager at Mainline Construction. “Serving our community has been one of our key tenants since Mainline opened in 1992, and this was another way for us to show our support.”

The firebreak spans 30 kilometres southeast of the city, and it will help reduce the risk of wildfires by providing an additional layer of protection for homes and critical infrastructure. “The firebreak is a preventative measure,” said Brad, “and this is one of those projects we hope isn’t needed in the long run, but we know it will keep our community safe if it is.”
